Sylvia Browne

Sylvia Browne is a well-known American psychic who appears regularly on television shows and in other media.

Browne was born in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, on 19 October 1936. According to her website, her psychic powers became known at age three when she correctly announced her grandfather's death and predicted her sister's birth1.

Browne began working as a professional psychic in 1973. She has experienced a checkered career since then, being declared bankrupt in 1988 and convicted of investment fraud and grand larceny in 19922.

Browne's television appearances have attracted much attention and criticism, in particular, for a number of spectacular mistakes.

Browne's supporters defend her errors by saying she cannot get it right 100% of the time, and some mistakes are acceptable. Critics argue that her percentage of "hits" is actually very low. More importantly, they argue, she delivers her information with complete confidence and assures people that they can make critical life decisions based on her information — a dangerous situation when dealing with health diagnoses, missing persons, etc.
